Slice of success for growing pie maker with home delivery service

A North Yorkshire pie making business which dates back almost a century is set for expansion following its pivot into home delivery.

Ripon-based firm Sturdy Foods is set to take on additional staff after a move to a home delivery model saw the sales of the company’s signature pies rocket.

Originally founded in 1930, the business has also added handmade pizzas to its production line during the COVID-19 crisis in an effort to meet a new demand for home delivery.

Following the success of the pizza launch, the company also launched its Yorkshire Handmade Pies line, and plans to hire six new members of staff by the end of 2020.

Owner James Sturdy explained: “We have been overwhelmed by the success of launching Yorkshire Handmade Pies and we have received orders from as far as the Isle of Bute, the Isle of Wight and everywhere in-between.

“We felt there was a gap in the market for a proper quality made pie, and the increase in online shopping during lockdown helped to fuel sales. It has been a huge challenge changing and expanding our customer base but one that we have thrived on.

“We are now on a mission to bring hand-crafted pies to the whole of the UK showcasing the incredible quality ingredients we have here in Yorkshire.”
