Millions of self-employed set for second funding boost following HMRC overpayment

The government has today launched a second grant to support self-employed people whose business has been affected by COVID-19.

Over three million people are set to be eligible for the new payment, which could see those affected receive up to £6,570 each.

The second support package follows initial support launched in May, which saw £7.8bn claimed by 2.7 million self-employed people.

HMRC have confirmed that it will not be demanding repayment for a small number of overpayments made during the first funding initiative.

A spokesperson for HMRC commented: “The vast majority of grants were paid correctly, but in a very small number of cases, not all the information held on a tax return was taken into account when calculating eligibility and grants.

“Our top priority has been ensuring self-employed people receive grants quickly while protecting public money from deliberate fraudsters.”
