London Crossrail train line project delayed further as it falls four years behind schedule

The developer of a multi-billion pound train line has announced that the project has been delayed until 2022.

The London Crossrail train line, which is being developed by Crossrail Limited and supported by Transport for London, is currently four years behind its initial schedule.

The $23bn project had construction work suspended in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and is now over-budget.

Crossrail Limited commented: “Delivery of the Elizabeth line is now in its complex final stages and is being completed at a time of great uncertainty due to the risks and potential impacts of further Covid outbreaks.

“The board’s latest assessment, based on the best available programme information right now, is that the central section between Paddington and Abbey Wood will be ready to open in the first half of 2022.”
