Tesco to create 16,000 permanent jobs after ‘lockdown success’
Grocery giant Tesco has announced plans to create tens of thousands of jobs after a strong performance during lockdown.
The firm is set to create 16,000 new jobs, including 10,000 staff to pick customer orders from shelves and 3,000 delivery drivers.
The roles, which will be permanent, are being created in response to the growing demand for online shopping, which has risen since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown restrictions.
The news comes as the company reported it expects online sales of more than £5.5bn in this - up from £3.3bn in 2019.
Head of Tesco in the UK and Ireland, Jason Tarry, commented: “These new roles will help us continue to meet online demand for the long term and will create permanent employment opportunities for 16,000 people across the UK.”
