Public consultation launched on 117 affordable homes scheme in York

Plans have been submitted for the development of 117 affordable homes in York which the public have been invited to share their views on.

The Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust is planning to build the properties, consisting of two and three bedroom houses and one and two bedroom apartments, at the Willow Bank project in the historic village of New Earswick.

They have been designed by Leeds based Brewster Bye Architects and will benefit from the garden village’s existing community facilities.

The trust is now asking existing residents in the area whether they would prefer social rent or shared ownership tenure, as well as their views on green space, road connections and pathways being incorporated into the development.

Additionally, they can feedback on car parking, pedestrian access and the building materials and design.

Public consultation closes on 18 September 2020, after which feedback will be reviewed. Changes resulting from the consultation will be incorporated into the plans ahead of a planning application being submitted to City of York Council. Findings from the consultation will also be shared with the local community.

Ian Atkinson, the development project manager, from Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, said: “There is a major shortage of affordable housing nationally and this is particularly true in York.

“The Willow Bank project is the first part of our development strategy to deliver 1000 new affordable homes in the York area during the next 10 years. We propose to provide genuinely affordable, high quality homes that people will aspire to live in.

“This development will enable many more local people and families to live in York, in a house that they are proud to call home. We are now reaching out to the local community for support and feedback and would urge as many people as possible to take part in this public consultation.”
