New apprentice boosts Barratt’s Romsey site post lockdown

A popular development in Romsey is leading the way for young people wishing to carve out a career in construction – by taking on a brand new apprentice.

Five-star housebuilder Barratt Homes has welcomed Luca Balducci (18) to its King’s Chase site, as it continues to work closely with Test Valley Borough Council to provide local training and development opportunities post-lockdown.

Luca, who is set to embark on a career as an apprentice carpenter said: “When exploring my future options, I felt that University was not for me. After researching apprenticeships I knew this was the route I wanted to take. Learning a trade will leave me with a lifetime skill, providing multiple pathways in my career.

“The decision was only made easier by Barratt Homes, who were extremely helpful in assisting me with any questions or queries I had. Everyone I have met has been very professional so I can’t wait to get stuck into the role and be part of a successful team.”

King’s Chase is an exclusive range of three and four-bedroom homes in Romsey, with beautiful countryside and walking trails close by. The development which will also be home to excellent new sports facilities and pitches, has welcomed a number of apprentices since its launch including Christopher Allen (20) who joined the housebuilder a year ago, as an apprentice site manager.

Christopher said: “My first year with Barratt Homes has been a fantastic experience, made even better by the exceptional training and mentoring I have received from Neil Bickell and Anthony Dimmick.

“As a people person, I am thrilled that I am in a role with a huge customer care focus – and I particularly love joining the buyers on their journey from the very first meeting to seeing their finished home.

“I have recently come back from furlough due to the coronavirus pandemic, but despite the industry-wide changes, Barratt Homes has been fantastic in keeping me up to date and has assured that my return to work has been a positive – and safe – experience.”

Complying to strict health and safety procedures is a practice Barratt Homes has followed long before Covid-19, and the leading housebuilder is keen to continue this high-standard of care as it continues to reintroduce local trades back from furlough.

Councillor Drew of Test Valley Borough Council, who visited King’s Chase to meet Luca and Christopher, comments: “We have enjoyed catching up with Barratt Homes to see how the employment and skills plans are being delivered. Such plans, which require construction companies to provide work placements for young people, training and career development, has never been more important as unemployment – especially among young people – continues to rise.

“We are extremely pleased to see such an efficient apprenticeship scheme at King’s Chase and look forward to seeing the incredible work both Luca and Christopher will do in the future.”

Christopher added: “For those who are looking towards the next step of their education I would highly recommend exploring apprenticeships as an option. On-site we look for people who are dedicated and are willing to learn – come rain or shine. It’s a fantastic industry to be a part of and I’m proud to be part of such a supportive team.”
