Life sciences group continues fight against COVID-19 with expanded Sheffield base

A national life sciences specialist has expanded into larger space at its Sheffield base after increasing its workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biotech firm Calibre Scientific UK has taken larger units at UKSE’s Innovation Centre in the heart of the city, after expanding its team to 21 members of staff as a result of increased demand for its services.

Calibre Scientific UK specialises in the provision of viral transport medium and lysis buffer – both used in the clinical testing of COVID-19 – as well as antibody and antigen testing kits for diagnostic use.

Located near to the city’s universities, the new space will support the firm’s growth plans which will see the further expansion of its team as well as investment in its infrastructure.

Andy Wright, general manager of Calibre Scientific UK, commented: “After moving to the Innovation Centre in 2013, what we found was an environment that supported our growth and shared our ambition to develop by assisting us with additional space, business support and an environment focussed on our needs.

“The flexibility of the UKSE team and the accessibility and facilities at the site made our further expansion at the Innovation Centre a clear step forward, allowing us to benefit from the talented graduates from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University and further enhance our team and offering.”

Keith Williams, regional manager at UKSE added: “After working with the team which make up Calibre Scientific UK for the last seven years, it’s been great to see them grow from a start-up team of four people to a business that has a global presence and is creating jobs in Sheffield.

“The Innovation Centre provides a high-quality working environment for growing companies, in a great location close to the city centre and Universities.

“Businesses do not have to be tied to a term lease and can focus on delivering their services rather than managing the facilities in which they work.”
