Local housebuilder supports Bluebell Wood Hospice, near Doncaster

Local housebuilder, Barratt Developments Yorkshire East, continues to support the communities in which it builds, by donating £1,000 as part of its Community Fund scheme to Bluebell Wood Hospice, in support of Cory Camplin.

The charity was nominated by Tony Finch, Labourer at the Park Edge site in Doncaster at Barratt Developments Yorkshire East, following the ongoing support he and his family have received due to his grandson, Cory, being born with an extremely rare genetic and life limiting condition called DYRK1a.

Tony’s chosen charity, Bluebell Wood Hospice, offers palliative care to children and young adults whose lives have a shorter expectancy than usual, as well providing much-needed support to their families. The vision of the hospice began in 1998, with the idea to help families in the local area who wanted an alternative to hospital care. With thanks to fundraising, the hospice opened its doors in 2008 to local families that needed support.

Cory has multiple, severe, and complex medical needs and regularly attends Bluebell Wood Hospice in Rotherham to receive ongoing care. Bluebell Wood describes itself as a home away from home for families facing the toughest of times. The charity heavily relies on donations and fundraising activities to ensure it’s able to continue providing high-quality services such as end of life care, physiotherapy, counselling sessions, family and sibling support on a daily basis.

Matthew Sheridan, Regional Fundraiser at Bluebell Wood Hospice, said: “We are extremely grateful to Barratt Developments for their generous donation. We support children and young adults whose lives are unfortunately just too short, and all of our services are completely free for their families. We want to relieve stress wherever possible for the families who use our services, and it’s amazing to be recognised for our hard work. This donation is much-needed, especially as it has been particularly difficult to raise additional funds this year - we will put the money to good use for the benefit of local families.”

Tony Finch, Site Labourer at Barratt Homes’ Park Edge development, commented: “I’m really appreciative for Barratt’s support though the Community Fund scheme - the money donated to Bluebell Wood Hospice means a great deal to my family and especially to my grandson, Cory. I’ve been able to witness the incredible work and commitment of the staff and their support has been phenomenal to my family. I hope that the donation will help the charity to assist more families who share similar experiences to my own across the region.”

The Community Fund initiative sees Barratt Developments Yorkshire East donate £1,000 to a different community group or charity from the region every month. In addition to this, over £11,000 was raised in July for the housebuilder’s charity of the year, SASH (Safe and Sound Homes), in a virtual Lap of Yorkshire challenge during lockdown.
