East London housing firm unveils masterplan to build more than 1,800 homes

An East London housing association has unveiled plans to build 1,880 homes in the capital.

The homes will be built in the Aberfeldy neighbourhood in Poplar, London. Housing association Poplar HARCA and developers Eco World London have discussed the neighbourhood’s masterplan with local residents for a number of years, with architects Levitt Bernstein heading up design.

A ballot of tenants showed that 91.1 per cent of votes favoured an estate regeneration, and the intention is now to submit a planning application in spring 2021.

The 1,880 homes represent a ‘significant’ increase in housing, with these new homes being a combination of social rent, shared ownership, and private sale homes. The regeneration will also see investment in public and business spaces, faith facilities, and improved public realm, with a focus on making walking and cycling safer and easier.

Steve Stride, CEO at Poplar HARCA, commented: “Local people have always been at the forefront of this masterplan and this is just the latest step to ensure this project works for everyone.

“We’re committed to delivering new and improved homes, including social rent and shared ownership properties, encouraging real growth in the areas.”

Steve continued, “We’ll create new jobs, while making the neighbourhood safer, more sustainable, and more secure.”

Emma Cotton, development director at EcoWorld London, said, “The community has been at the heart of the masterplan from the beginning.

“From new workspace to safer, healthier streets, this is an amazing opportunity to deliver a community-led regeneration project that transforms Aberfeldy.”
