Award winning placement for Plymouth student
Plymouth University student Matthew Lees has received a prestigious award from the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) for his outstanding performance during a placement year as part of his BEng Civil Engineering course.
Matthew, originally from Chelmsford, was named the top Plymouth University student at the CECA South West Young Achiever Awards for his outstanding achievements while working with Jackson Civil Engineering. He was one of five young people recognised for exceptional performance and dedication at a COVID-secure ceremony in Torquay sponsored by BAM Nuttall.
During his placement year, Matthew took on the role of site engineer on a number of projects, including the installation of embankment piles on a 115m section of the M11 and the replacement and maintenance of piers at West Woodford.
Said Paul Watson, Highways Director at Jackson Civil Engineering: “Matthew’s enthusiasm shone through on every project and with his commitment and desire to learn he clearly has a very bright future ahead of him.”
Paul Santer, CECA South West Regional Director, said that the success of Matthew and the other winners highlighted the current opportunities available for young people in civil engineering.
Said Paul: “Matthew has made an exceptional start to his university studies and has now successfully applied his talents in the field.
“Civil engineering needs more young people like Matthew who can bring their talent and enthusiasm to our industry. There are lots of opportunities for young men and women across many different areas of the economy – from coastal engineering and marine projects to transportation and renewable energy. Indeed, many of our previous winners are now working on some of the most important infrastructure projects in the UK.”
The CECA South West Young Achiever Awards are presented annually in recognition of exceptional performance, with each winner receiving a trophy and cheque for £500.
