New decorating and DIY store in Kingston brings charity boost

A leading decorating and DIY specialist has opened a new store in Kingston – and has brought a £1,000 boost to the local community in the process.

Leyland SDM has opened the doors to its new store at 117 London Road.

As part of the opening celebrations, a Give Kingston a Lift campaign was launched inviting entries from community groups and charities to receive a £500 store credit boost.

Momentum Children’s Charity and Staywell were selected as the winners by a panel of judges.

Working locally, Momentum Children’s Charity supports families whose children have cancer or a life-challenging condition.

It offers individually tailored support through its family support programme, with practical and emotional help, as well as a range of therapy services including music, play and art.

The charity has donated its £500 to a family it is supporting, who plan to use the money to buy decorating materials to revamp their child’s bedroom and playroom.

Kate Brookes, Corporate Fundraiser at Momentum Children’s Charity, said: “£500 is a massive amount for one family to receive and it will make a huge difference and give them a lift during a terribly difficult time.

“We are extremely grateful to Leyland SDM for their support.”

Staywell, meanwhile, works to support older people to live independently in their own homes.

The charity offers practical help, including carrying out DIY jobs around the home. Shane Brennan, Staywell CEO, said: “We’ll use this money to buy hardware and equipment for work in people’s homes.

“It’s fantastic that Leyland SDM is supporting us and it will make a real difference.” Rob Alexander, store manager at Leyland SDM Kingston, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to support Momentum Children’s Charity and Staywell.

“Supporting charities and community groups in the local areas in which we operate is an integral part of the Leyland SDM ethos so we are delighted to mark the opening of our new store with these donations. We hope the funding will make a real difference to these very worthy causes.”

Leyland SDM, which has 24 other stores in London, is open to both trade professionals and the general public, with a whole range of household DIY, painting, decoration and construction tools and materials on offer.

Established in 1985, Leyland SDM started trading with a single store in central London, supplying local tradesmen as a Specialist Decorators’ Merchants with paint and decorating materials.

Today, the business has grown to become one of the most recognisable and trusted decorating and DIY retail brands in central London with stores in some of London’s most prominent locations.
