CMA to support "green revolution" with electric vehicle charging market study
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced plans to examine the electric vehicle charging market in a bid to ensure customers are treated fairly.
In response to the government bringing forward the ban of new petrol and diesel vehicles to 2030 as part of its “green industrial revolution”, the CMA is taking an in-depth look at the electric vehicle charging sector in the form of a new market study.
The study will cover two areas: ensuring the sector remains competitive as well as attracting investment, and increasing consumer confidence around the abundance, convenience and reliability of electric vehicle charging points.
Andrea Coscelli, chief executive of the CMA, explained: “Making the switch to electric vehicles is key to helping the UK become greener, which is why it’s so important that everyone has the confidence to get behind the move.
“Being able to easily stop off at a petrol station is a standard part of a journey and consumers must trust that electric chargepoints will provide a similarly straight-forward service.
“By getting involved early as electric vehicles and chargepoints are still developing, the CMA can make sure consumers are treated fairly now and in the future.”
