University Centre Leeds seeks applications for film and TV hair and makeup course as part of Centre of Screen Excellence: Yorkshire

University Centre Leeds is calling for applications to an industry-recognised hair and makeup course.

The part-time training programme is running for the second year as part of Centre of Screen Excellence: Yorkshire, an initiative designed to provide trainees with a clear pathway to working in the film and TV industry.

Centre of Screen Excellence: Yorkshire is delivered by the National Film and Television School (NFTS) Leeds in partnership with Screen Yorkshire, supported by ScreenSkills using National Lottery funds awarded by the BFI as part of the Future Film Skills programme.

The UK Film and TV Hair and Makeup Craft Certificate has been designed by the National Film and Television School as a result of the skills being identified as in demand across Yorkshire’s thriving film and television industries.

Glyn Middleton, Head of Skills at Screen Yorkshire, said: “We have launched five craft courses as part of our ambitious growth plan for the region’s screen industries. These tailored programmes ensure young people are trained to the highest industry standards, equipping them with a refreshed and relevant set of skills that meet the needs of the sector.

“The hair and makeup course will involve two boot camps, providing insight and training into the world of film and TV, including set etiquette and freelancing. We are committed to addressing underrepresentation within screen industries and therefore encourage people from any background to apply.”

The bespoke programme provides students with a clear route into the industry, enhancing their hair and makeup craft skills. Taught by industry professionals, the course will run from March to January 2021 and will be delivered through practical sessions, virtual tutorials, online masterclasses and on-set work placements.

Estelle Greenhalgh, Deputy Head of Higher Education Creative Arts at University Centre Leeds, commented: “It’s a privilege to be running this expert-led programme for the second year. Last year, we saw ten students transform their abilities through the certificate. Although students were unable to complete work experience due to coronavirus restrictions, they heard from phenomenal online guest speakers including Stephen Fry.

“Students were also added to the Screen Yorkshire crew and facilities database and were paired with a specialist industry mentor to guide them into the next step of their careers.”
