IWD 2021 Introduction: Striving for equality during a global crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic has completely changed the way that business operates and disrupted the lives of people of all genders.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2021 (March 8) and in honour of Women’s History Month, Bdaily will look at how businesswomen across a range of sectors faced the challenges caused by the pandemic - arguably the most historically significant event of modern times.

With the rise of working from home, domestic obligations and work duties met in an unprecedented way. The merging of a traditionally ‘masculine’ world of business and the traditionally ‘feminine’ sphere of the home provided both benefits and disadvantages for women.

While the pandemic opened up opportunities for career changes via remote working, ignited entrepreneurial spirit in newcomers to business and saw the boom of new market demands, it also brought up the question of gendered domestic labour and highlighted the pay gap.
