Highways England accolade for Mersey-made sports safety app
Highways England has awarded a converted Blue Star Award to the Merseyside-made safety app ‘Busby’ after recognising the lifesaving potential of the smartphone technology. The app, which is free to download on any iOS or Android smartphones, uses sensors in a mobile phone to automatically detect a crash or a fall. It geolocates the user and, after a 30 second countdown, alerts emergency contacts if no motion is detected. Busby, which aims to make outdoor sporting activities safer, was launched in 2019 by Liverpool-born friends Barry Green, James Duffy and Kirk Ryan. The technology is used by cyclists, walkers, horse riders, runners all over the world and earlier this year, Busby partnered up with Africa’s only UCI World Tour cycling team, Team Qhubeka Assos. The Blue Star award from Highways England recognises new initiatives and exceptional performance. Commenting on the accolade James Duffy, co-founder of Busby, said: “We are incredibly pleased to have secured this important recognition from Highways England. “This award underlines the contribution our lifesaving technology is making to making outdoor sports activities safer, particularly for people using Britain’s roads. Busby is a free to download smartphone app and is something everyone should seriously consider taking advantage of. We’ve invested heavily in a product that really does make our roads safer for everyone.”
