Student secures permanent role at stairlift manufacturer

A student at Keighley College has accepted a full-time role at local manufacturer, Acorn Stairlifts, following their supported internship.

Max Soundy, who completed a fabrication and welding course, began working part-time at the firm six months ago as part of his supported internship; a structured study programme enabling young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan to achieve sustainable employment by providing them with essential work skills.

During his internship, he developed practical skills and worked alongside experienced staff members on the pre-assembly line.

His enthusiastic attitude and determination was recognised amongst the team and factory manager, Andrew Longthorne, who offered him a permanent position as a production operative.

Andrew commented: “Max’s eagerness to learn is commendable; he always jumps at any opportunity to develop his abilities. His dedication to the role was demonstrated by his willingness to work additional hours; we’re excited to have such an energetic individual working permanently with us.”

As part of his new role, Max will be responsible for the cleaning, kitting and inspection of all parts on the pitch line.

Emma Rich, Supported Internship Manager at Keighley College, added: “It’s amazing to see how Max has grown in confidence since joining Acorn Stairlifts. The staff have been incredibly committed to nurturing his skills and knowledge over the past few months.

“Our supported internship programme is essential for developing important life and work skills, preparing our students for the workplace. We’re extremely proud to be working with businesses across the community to provide invaluable opportunities for our students.”

Supported internships allow students to work with a dedicated team of job coaches to develop their employability skills in the workplace.
