Sunderland companies strengthened by buying local

A LEADING North East waste management and skip hire company is living up to its commitment to climate change and reducing its own carbon footprint by buying local.

Thompson Waste Ltd at the Parade, Hendon has grown rapidly in recent years through constant reinvestment back in the business, along with an increased demand for its expert services.

Director, Anne Ganley, decided to look close to home when she needed more skips, which are now being created by DLAW Contractors at the Port of Sunderland.

As well as supporting a local business, the move has meant Thompson Waste has reduced company mileage used on purchasing and fabricating skips by tens of thousands of miles a year.

DLAW Contractors set up to manufacture industrial heating and cooling systems, but the rapid expansion of the company has meant it has been able to diversify into other areas.

And that includes dealing with the order from Thompson’s for a number of new skips, plus being awarded the contract to repair the company’s 500 plus skips and their container fleet throughout the year.

DLAW has already completed the first order of midi skips for the company, worth £50k.

Anne Ganley, whose family has run a business in Hendon since the 1950s, is passionate about adding value to the local economy and is delighted to be able to work with a company on her doorstep.

“I am a firm believer that if you can work with companies in the city then you should always do that,” she said.

“DLAW Contractors is a fantastic success story not just for Hendon but for Sunderland as a whole.

“The company’s work is of the highest quality and it means that I can finally source what I need from a local company, which I’ve not been able to do for many years.

“We’ve managed to carry out smaller repairs in house but we’ve always had to go out of the area for quality fabrication but we no longer have to do this.

“I hope this is the start of a very long business parftnership for us both.” Dale Barry, MD at DLAW, echoed Anne’s words.

“We have been incredibly busy since we launched but it’s always great to be able to collaborate with another local company,” said Dale, who’s company was nominated for an innovation award.

“We will be manufacturing skips for Thompsons and this also showcases our ability to diversify.

“It’s brilliant that we are able to work together.”
