First major phase in Peabody’s Thamesmead regeneration underway

Marking the first major milestone for Peabody’s ground-breaking regeneration of Thamesmead, the lakeside village of Southmere has officially launched, ultimately delivering over 500 new homes alongside a public square and community library, shops and resident facilities.

With one, two and three bedroom apartments and selected homes available through London Help to Buy, Southmere offers prospective purchasers the opportunity to buy at the very start of the wider Thamesmead vision, which will transform the district famed for its brutalist architecture and silver screen appearances into a new town for the capital.

Southmere and Thamesmead are already home to a dynamic community of creatives, with a regular programme of co-designed activities and community initiatives in place. The iconic Southmere Lake, which is currently being revitalised, will provide access to a new fishing platform and Boat Club, offering paddleboarding and kayaking.

The centre of Southmere, Cygnet Square will host a variety of exciting leisure and retail opportunities, as well as independent shops, restaurants and cafes. A series of events is also due to begin later this month.

The wider Thamesmead regeneration is one of the capital’s most significant. With the goal of 100,000 residents by 2050, it will also offer over 240 hectares of parks and green space, five lakes, and seven kilometres of canals.
