Work begins on final stage of multi-million pound Teesside International airport transformation

A North East airport has announced work has begun on the final part of its multi-million pound terminal transformation scheme.

Teesside International has started work to create its new duty-free shop, which will form the final part of its multimillion-pound terminal transformation.

The new store will be operated by World Duty Free, which has signed a 12-year deal with the airport.

Construction on the 1,860sq ft unit will be undertaken by Wharton Construction and is expected to take six weeks.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Any airport worth its salt has a fantastic duty-free shop and in a matter of weeks Teesside Airport will once more be able to offer passengers some great products and deals after an eight-year absence.

“We’ve again signed up some brilliant local businesses that have a strong track record with the airport to help deliver this latest development, keeping the money we spend in our region and putting it back in the pockets of local people from across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.

“As we continue to grow our routes, with 15 popular services announced since we brought the airport back into public control and with an even brighter and better 2022 to look forward to, our partnership with World Duty Free will prove another real asset to our airport.”
