New creative industries hub opens in South London to 'preserve and stimulate' innovation
A new creative industries hub that can house more than 1,000 artists has launched in London’s Greenwich Peninsula.
Design District is a dedicated hub aiming to preserve and stimulate creative innovation and enterprise that is key to the economic growth of the creative sector.
Conceived by entrepreneurial place-makers, Knight Dragon, Design District has been designed to foster collaboration with affordable rent across a variety of different working spaces.
The site consists of 16 different buildings and can house 1,800 creatives.
Kerri Sibson, director at Greenwich Peninsula, said: “Making art, culture, and design accessible and inclusive will always be a focus for us.
“Design District is an exciting and important step towards supporting businesses and individuals through all stages of growth, providing a much-needed home – at a crucial time for ideas-sharing, connection-building and innovation – all of which have suffered greatly over the last 18 months.”
Businesses already onsite include QUEERCIRCLE, a non-profit; Concept Kicks, a footwear-design research project and publication; and Brace Yourself PR, an independent music brand.
Design District will sit alongside several other cultural destinations including Canteen, a new food destination; The Basketball Court, a rooftop relaxation area; NOW Gallery; The Tide, London’s first elevated park and public art trail; Bureau, a members’ club; and On/Off Office, catering to the new world of flexible working routines within businesses.
