Sheffield’s new food destination to bring street food, bars and live entertainment to the Plate at Orchard Square
The wait is finally over! Sheffield’s new food destination is opening its doors this week, bringing together local independent street food vendors, bars and live entertainment.
Sheffield Plate, spanning two floors in Orchard Square, located in the heart of the city centre, will offer food from around the world including Sri Lanka, Romania, Peru, Thailand and Portugal – as well as from across the UK.
The city’s Wingin’ It that has taken the chicken world by storm, is one of the six local independent traders, including Sri Lankan, Peruvian, Romanian, Portuguese and Thai - all bringing exciting, fresh food to the Plate.
Madusha Wettasinghe, owner of Colombo Street Food, that serves up Sri Lankan cuisine comments: “We are really excited to be part of Sheffield Plate which marks the opening our third outlet. We just know because of the variety of cuisine on offer – along with the venue’s vibe itself – that this is going to be a very popular choice for so many people in Sheffield.”
Situated in the former Evans ladieswear store, the street food venue is the brainchild of leading market and food hall operator Market Asset Management (MAM) and the owners of Orchard Square, London & Associated Properties (LAP).
Hayden Ferriby, Commercial Director at MAM, comments: “After months of hard work it’s fantastic to now open Sheffield Plate as the vibrancy of the city centre returns following the pandemic.
“The food hall is perfectly situated to not only serve existing shoppers but also increase footfall by attracting new visitors who will come for the food, bars and mix of live entertainment each week.”
The venue will complement the existing independent food traders at Orchard Square, including Terrace Goods and Macpot, which offer customers food and drink across an outdoor terrace overlooking the square.
John Heller of LAP said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Sheffield Plate to the retail, food and entertainment line-up at Orchard Square.
“Presenting a diverse range of independent food and entertainment to suit all tastes, Sheffield Plate will both complement and build on our current offer for customers, creating valuable, inclusive and safe places that bring communities together. As a destination venue it will further work to drive footfall, thus supporting the local and regional economy as shoppers return to the city.”
Sheffield Plate will open on Friday 24th September with live music and entertainment and offer an ongoing schedule of events from weekly quizzes to live music and spoken word, giving local artists the chance to showcase their talents.
David Shaul, Digital Media Strategist for MAM said: “The whole concept of being able to come out with your friends and family and all eat something completely different whilst enjoying it together in one place is definitely the way forward when it comes to socialising.
“Sheffield Plate will bring exciting food, drinks and be a platform for local artists from all genres to showcase their skills, right in the heart of the city centre.”
