The roadmap to net zero – join other North East businesses in creating a brighter future

On Friday 22 October 2021, the North East will welcome the Zero Carbon Tour to the region - a government-led series of events around the country showcasing the amazing efforts being undertaken – both locally and globally – to aid in the transition to a net zero carbon economy.

The tour aims to spread the net zero carbon message ahead of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and features the UK’s first 100% electric coach – affectionately known as ‘the Carbon Battle Bus’.

Lucy Winskell, Chair of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), said: “It’s great news that government is bringing its Zero Carbon Tour to our region – during the visit we will have the opportunity to showcase some of the world-leading green initiatives that are happening right here in the North East. From homes heated by hydrogen to the recycling of electric car batteries and from offshore wind to mine energy heat networks, our region is pioneering green solutions that will help in the fight to halt the climate crisis.

“Through our commitment to Net Zero, we will accelerate our region’s transition to a greener economy and society, protecting our natural environment and improving quality of life for all who live, work, learn and visit here.”

The Zero Carbon Tour is designed to give an overview of what net zero carbon means, the significance of COP26, how organisations can officially join the UN-backed Race to Zero and what resources they can tap into as part of the Together for Our Planet campaign.

Participants in the online event, held on October 22, will learn how they can contribute to the race to net zero and make savings for their business along the way.

There will also be discussion on the concept of net zero carbon and why it is critical for businesses, and stories of projects which are being undertaken by local people, organisations and community groups to reduce their carbon emissions.

Businesses in the North East can also take part in the #TogetherForOurPlanet campaign by pledging their support to cut carbon emissions and protect the planet by signing up to the SME Climate Commitment.

The SME Climate Commitment demonstrates a business’s commitment to halve greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 and reach net-zero emissions before 2050.
