Engineering firm appointed £20m development near St James' Park

An engineering specialist has announced its appointment to a £20m commercial development adjacent to the historic Strawberry pub next to St James’ Park football ground.

SES Engineering Services will develop One Strawberry Lane. It is set to become the new six-storey headquarters for The Home Group housing association, also acting as a support hub for the city’s voluntary sector.

Designed by Ryder Architecture, the building is expected to achieve a BREEAM Excellent and EPC rating of A.

SES has recently started on site, with a planned handover at the end of May 2022.

The programme is expected to support an estimated 400 construction and supply chain jobs throughout the project.

SES’ managing director, Steve Joyce, added: “SES has an excellent track record for delivering projects of this calibre and we are delighted with our appointment to this major development which will add the finishing touches to this busy commercial quarter of the city.

“It is a project in which sustainability particularly will be extremely important, with the exacting performance standards we must achieve. However, I am confident we are not only up to the task but believe the completed building will go some way to helping Newcastle City Council achieve its ambitious Net Zero target by 2030.”
