New Manufacturing Zone open for business
Manufacturing, innovation and productivity are the cornerstones of South Tyneside’s economy, and its location on the banks of the River Tyne and proximity to the North Sea puts it right at the heart of the UK’s growing energy sector.
The borough’s reputation as an offshore hub with excellent transport links by road, rail and sea make South Tyneside the perfect choice for businesses wanting to access opportunities at Dogger Bank Wind Farm as well as the wider offshore energy supply chain.
Significant investments in the North East’s advanced manufacturing and offshore wind sectors have unlocked the potential to create thousands of jobs and firmly establish the region as one of the world’s leading business destinations for new emerging businesses. This has led to the creation of a new Manufacturing Zone that will provide much-needed quality accommodation for SMEs operating in the manufacturing and offshore supply chain sector to grow and create jobs.
South Tyneside Council was awarded almost £500,000 from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), to refurbish around 800m2 of space at Jarrow Business Centre.
The bespoke space can accommodate six high growth SME businesses. It is located in an established manufacturing area in proximity to the International Advanced Manufacturing Park and Nissan.
Close to Jarrow town centre, the Manufacturing Zone is just a few minutes’ drive to the A19 and A1(M) providing excellent road links North and South. The centre is also well served by public transport via the Tyne and Wear Metro and local bus services.
It is anticipated that the development will have long- term impacts on the wider region as companies develop and grow, moving on to larger accommodation in the North East.
Cllr Mark Walsh, lead Member for Regeneration and Economy, said:
“One of our key priorities is to create the conditions for investment and recovery; this development will provide high quality manufacturing space to businesses from the borough and beyond, create jobs and boost productivity and competition.
“There are six brand new self-contained units which would be an ideal base for SMEs wishing to serve larger tier 1 and tier 2 manufacturers. We’re looking forward to welcoming new businesses and are inviting prospective tenants to get in touch.”
