The Jewellery Quarter invests in eco-friendly spring cleaning
A brand new eco-friendly cleaning system has been rolled out across the Jewellery Quarter this spring. Operated by the Jewellery Quarter Business Improvement District (JQBID), the green investment will make the area a cleaner and safer place to work, live and visit.
The Glutton H₂O Perfect vacuum cleaner marks the JQBID’s latest investment into maintaining and futureproofing the Quarter’s historic landscape for its residents, local businesses and visitors alike. The 100% electric cleaning solution is equipped with an ergonomic water jet and a 60-litre water tank, alongside a powerful vacuum, making it an integral part of the Jewellery Quarter Clean team’s efforts within the area.
Commenting on the new system, Luke Crane – Executive Director of the JQBID – said:
“Throughout the pandemic and beyond, our top focus has been to keep the Quarter clean and safe for all of our businesses, residents, and visitors. Our investment into the Glutton system is set to make a huge impact within the local community and we’re confident it will help to increase footfall and dwell time within the area – especially as we approach the spring and summer months!
“Alongside keeping our streets and open spaces clean and tidy, we are continuing to explore new, greener technology that we can implement whilst working with local communities in 2022 and beyond to make sure that the area remains an inviting, well-maintained space for all during the years to come.”
Operating five days per week and with over six years of experience, the JQBID Clean Team is led by supervisor Dennis Cluley and covers the full scope of the Jewellery Quarter and has most recently welcomed new recruit Steve Male to its ranks.
Collaborating with local community groups - including students from Argent College during term time - to coordinate weekly litter picks, the team also supports the work of Birmingham City Council (BCC) by removing a variety of waste, including needles, graffiti and stickers. In December 2021 alone, the team removed 281 bags of rubbish and 22 pieces of graffiti from the area.
“We are so proud of our Clean Team and the selfless work they do to make the Jewellery Quarter a cleaner and safer place to work, live and visit. As well as supporting our plans to continuously improve the local environment and wellbeing of our residents and visitors, we’re confident that this new system will be the first of many more eco-friendly practices we’re looking to roll out in 2022,” added Luke.
Within recent years, the JQBID has facilitated numerous projects to improve the local area. From securing a community grant from West Midlands Railway (WMR) to create an eco-garden within the Jewellery Quarter Railway station to coordinating regular litter picks alongside the Clean Team, local businesses and residents, the JQBID works to ensure that the Quarter’s reputation as a must-see part of Birmingham is upheld.
