Debbie Whitfiled, Fabrix

Fabrix, the investor and developer behind London’s Roots in the Sky, has hired Debbie Whitfield as part of its commitment to driving positive urban change for London.

Debbie has more than 20 years’ experience in connecting business, government and communities within the built environment. Prior to joining Fabrix, she spent 15 years at New London Architecture (NLA), where she has been since its inception in 2005, becoming Managing Director in 2019.

She has also sat on the Mayor’s Fund Built Environment Steering Group, which supports low-income young Londoners into the industry, and has championed diversity through the NLA’s Inspiring Women and Diverse Leaders programs.

As Urban Impact Director Debbie will oversee the company’s contribution to urban environments. This will include managing external affairs as well as the delivery of Fabrix’s social and environmental impact strategy, strengthening its position as London’s most progressive developer.

She will use her extensive experience to build partnerships with other organisations, unlocking further opportunities for Fabrix to implement their creative placemaking agenda.

Fabrix’s current projects include a radical reimagining of the former Blackfriars Crown Court into Roots in the Sky, a workspace with a 1.4-acre rooftop forest of over 100 established trees. It will be the UK’s first office building to deliver an urban forest rooftop and will provide extensive access for the local community and the public.

This February, Fabrix announced the tenth acquisition of its i2 property fund in 12 months: the 1960s-built former offices of Southwark Council - Chatelain House - which the developer is now planning to repurpose for a mix of uses.

Debbie Whitfield, Urban Impact Director at Fabrix, said: “I couldn’t be more excited to join Fabrix – a company that is absolutely committed to developing in a way that has a positive impact on both people and planet.

“At NLA I had the privilege of driving change across the industry through facilitating discussion amongst some of the built environment’s best minds and practitioners. I am now relishing the opportunity to get closer to development first-hand and apply that thinking and experience with a developer and investor as progressive as Fabrix.”
