New programme launches to help Sunderland create “100 new tech businesses”

Tech Startup Sunderland is a new programme of activity to help entrepreneurs across Sunderland to bring their tech and digital ideas to life through a wide range of expert-led support.

Delivered by Sunderland Software City and developed as part of Sunderland City Council’s Smart City activity, this programme has been designed to help boost Sunderland’s digital economy, creating a place where everyone can take tech business ideas to global markets.

From an initial pilot, Tech Startup Sunderland has been working with individuals from across Sunderland on their “unique tech business ideas”.

Michael Dunn, head of enterprise, said: “We have been amazed by the quality of tech ideas that have been brought to us so far as part of the pilot. We now want to roll out the programme to more people with the ambition to start at least 100 new tech businesses in the next two years.”

“We are lucky to have built a team in Software City that has a strong background in tech business creation and now this expert support is available at no cost to the residents of Sunderland”

Liz St Louis, assistant director of smart cities at Sunderland Council, added: “This programme echoes our ambition for the city, it is a tech startup programme for everyone in the city, no matter how early-stage their idea is, their level of experience or their background.”

“It is another example of Sunderland building strong partnerships that can offer opportunities to the residents and businesses in the city.”
