This week’s round up of North East appointments includes Smart Works, Lemon Contact Centre, Building Design North. Read on to find out more.

Julie Cuthbertson, Smart Works

Smart Works Newcastle, a charity that helps unemployed women back into work, has appointed a new member to its Board of Trustees. Julie Cuthbertson, Corporate Finance Manager at RMT Accountants & Business Advisors, joins the Board at Smart Works Newcastle.

Smart Works has been doing instrumental work to develop women in the North East, smashing targets for numbers supported with appointments and appointing Sara Davies MBE as their North East ambassador. New trustee Julie will add further strength and experience to the team.

On joining the board, Julie said “Smart Works is making a real difference to so many women who are seeking employment across the North East, and I am delighted to have secured a position alongside the existing board at this exciting time as we plan to double the number of women we support.

“The success of any organisation is underpinned by its people and Smart Works has a fantastic team who are doing an incredible job for the women in our region.

“I am hugely passionate about collaborating for the benefit of all, and firmly believe the work Smart Works does will continue to see great success as we deepen our relationships across our referral partner network.” 

Paul Ovington, Lemon Contact Centre

Teesside-based Lemon Contact Centre has appointed an expert with an extensive track record as its Human Resources Manager. Paul Ovington, who has more than three decades’ experience in the field of HR, has joined the company, which is located at Lockheed Court, Preston Farm Business Park, Stockton.

For 22 years he was a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer HR in the RAF where he was responsible for Squadron and Station HR functions. He served for a further seven years as a full-time Reservist in a HR capacity.

The 49-year-old has also worked as a HR business partner with County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, where he provided advice to assist with the delivery of organisational strategies, plans, projects, and objectives for more than 600 staff.

Jen Cummins, Lemon’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Paul brings an impressive set of skills and experience to the business. Lemon is committed to nurturing a supportive culture throughout the business and Paul’s knowhow and devotion will help us further embed this ethos as we grow and develop.”

“My main focus will be to help Lemon achieve its goals, retain and attract a high calibre of staff and support employees to reach their full potential within the workplace.”

John Herring, Building Design Northern

North East Multi-Disciplined Engineering and Architecture firm, Building Design Northern (BDN), has hired John Herring as civil engineer to facilitate the ambitious growth of the Civil Engineering department. 

John, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nottingham, has spent the last 15 years living in the USA, spending several years working for international engineering firms in New York and Ohio.

In his career, he has worked on multiple high profile, multi-disciplinary projects, including the creation of a transportation facility for the Bronx Zoo.   

John said, ‘‘I am delighted to join the BDN team and be part of an ambitious company in my hometown. It is an exciting period for the company, and I am looking forward to working with new clients on a range of projects. I hope that my varied experience will help BDN continue its impressive growth.’’ 

Andrew Webb, Director of Civil Engineering, who redeveloped the division when he joined the practice in 2020, said, ’’It is a pleasure to witness the continued growth of the Civil Engineering department. We are delighted to welcome John to the team.“
