Iconic Nineties and Noughties perfumes are trending again

It’s not just 90s neon’s, 00s low-slung waists and cropped tops that have made a comeback to the fashion runways and our wardrobes for SS22 - we’re opting for nineties and noughties nostalgia in our choice perfumes, reports online prefume retailer, Perfume Direct. Not stopping at fashion for inspiration from the 90s and noughties, Gen Z are sniffing out iconic scents to compliment the current SS22 trends!

According to PerfumeDirect, sales of best selling perfumes created in both the 90s and 00s have soared since the release of the SS22 fashion collections that include some of the most memorable trends of the past 25 years including cargo pants, barely-there miniskirts, keyhole cut-outs and tassel crop tops. What’s more, these fragrances don’t come with the price tag that many of their 2020’s counterparts, holding a price tag from the nineties and noughties. So let’s embrace some Kylie and ‘step back in time’ (released 1990) to see what scents are proving a big hit with Gen Z!

Jean Paul Gaultier Women’s Perfume JPG Classique launched in 1993, fast became THE fragrance of the 90s not only thanks to its distinctive bottle but for its sweet uplifting and intoxicating aroma. Whilst it’s been a best-seller for almost 30 years, the return back to 90’s nostalgia has opened it up to a whole new Gen Z audience. Calvin Klein Unisex Perfume, Calvin Klein CK One launched at the height of the supermodel era and just after Kate Moss’ iconic topless Calvin Klein photoshoot, and this unisex fragrance was the perfect way for the general public to embrace the brand. The refreshingly crisp cool scent was and will always will be revolutionary.

As fashionistas adorned their cargo pants and cropped tops, strappy mini dresses and obligatory blue eyeliner, the finishing ‘spritz’ was found in Clinique’s Happy, launched in 1998. This scent epitomises the care-free Y2K era that is perhaps driving its cultural resurgence. Fresh and summery with a hint of citrus, this scent does exactly what it says on the tin – makes you happy.

When Britney Spears, THE noughties Icon, created her own fragrance in 2004, it became an instant hit. The Free Britney movement put the star firmly back in the spotlight, but fans of 00s fashion (and of the singer and the scent) are flocking to relive those years when some of her biggest hits were in the charts (Toxic and My Prerogative to name just a few).

From the iconic apple shaped bottle to the fresh, fruity scent inside, DKNY Be Delicious has the noughties written all over it! Launched in 2004, this is another great choice for the Summer months and a great way to add a touch of 00s style to your bathroom cabinet.

As we paraded our 00s exposed midriffs around the dance floor to I’m Still Jenny From The Block (released 2004), JLo followed up her No. 1 hit with “Glow” a scent that became an equally successful release.
If this iconic bottle didn’t adorn your dressing table in the mid-2000’s can you even call yourself a JLo fan? From the rhinestone logo decoration on the bottle to the fun fruity, floral fragrance, this lively and uplifting scent is the epitome of the noughties. And since Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck reignited their 00’s relationship, demand for this fragrance has increased as people take a nostalgia trip and remember why the decade was so great. Launched 2005.

Thanks to 00s icons Britney Spears, Paris Hamilton and Beyonce, Juicy Couture tracksuits were another fashion must-have of the decade and it’s another brand making a comeback in 2022. As such, Juicy’s blinging perfume bottles and gourmet floral scents are high on shopper’s wish lists as fragrance fans young and old embrace the decadent nostalgia of this brand.

Adorning the dressing tables of teenage girl’s bedrooms across the UK in the noughties, Princess by Vera Wang is finding a whole new audience in today’s teens. The unmistakable (and on-trend) purple heart-shaped bottle and jewel-studded crown lid epitomises the era.

“Noughties and 90’s nostalgia is officially trending and it’s not just low slung jeans, Ugg boots and combat pants that are back in fashion – the nation is turning to scent to take us back to the pre and post Y2K era too” says Jonny Webber from online perfume retailer, Perfume Direct.

“Sales of some of the noughties’ most popular fragrances are on the rise as people embrace everything that the early 1990s and 2000’s had to offer – from the iconic scents created by Britney Spears and JLo (that officially kicked off the celebrity fragrance trend) to the late Thierry Mugler’s Alien which has gained increased notoriety this year thanks to TikTok.

“With noughties fashion back on the catwalks it is no surprise that nostalgic perfume searches have quickly followed suit. Afterall, fragrance has the power to instantly transport us back to a moment in time, evoking memories and giving us the feel good factor that a lot of people are craving right now.

“Whilst many millennials might not be rushing to dust off their old 00’s hipster jeans, a perfume is the perfect way to embrace the trend and re-live their youth. At the same time the TikTok generation are rediscovering some of these cult classics – giving them a whole new lease of life in 2022.

“Many of the most popular fragrances from this decade really epitomise the fun, carefree and opulence of the era – from celebrity scents, fashion brands turned perfumers and sweet, playful fruity fragrances that take us back to a more innocent time.”
