JD Sports opens new flagship store in Gateshead Metrocentre
This Saturday saw sports, fashion and outdoor brand retailer JD Sports open the doors to its newest flagship store, welcoming local sneakerheads and budding athletes.
To celebrate the store opening, local DJ and producer, Jerome Price, who has worked with artists such as Deadmau5 and has over 60 million streams, got the crowds dancing with an Ibiza-inspired soundtrack, alongside local TikTok “power couple”, Nathan and Grace who welcomed consumers into the new store.
The 18,000 sq ft North East flagship, which is said to have “tech and innovation at its heart” and is home to over 50 brands, has created an influx of new jobs for the community and provides local activewear advocates with their fix of brands including Nike, adidas and The North Face.

A spokesperson on behalf of JD Sports commented: “JD Sports has occupied a special place on the nation’s high streets for over 40 years. We pride ourselves on embracing the communities that shop with us and the culture that surrounds us, and this new Metrocentre store embodies that commitment.”
Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, senior asset manager for Metrocentre, added: “It’s fantastic to unveil the new flagship JD Sports store, a truly exceptional fit out from one of our leading brands.
“The store is set to be the largest in the region, providing an upgraded destination for streetwear and sports apparel from over 40 of the biggest and best brands around.
“The opening follows the recent launch of H beauty by Harrods in lower Town Square earlier this month with other exciting developments in the pipeline. Major occupiers continue to invest in Metrocentre as the leading regional destination for retail, hospitality, and leisure.”
