Government in crisis: Boris Johnson set to step down from conservative party leadership

Following a turbulent week in Parliament, Boris Johnson looks set to step down as the leader of the Conservative party, however, it is believed that he hopes to remain as Prime minister until October.

In discussions with Sir Graham Brady, chair of the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee he agreed to stand down. In the wake of a series of blunders for the conservative government and the mass resignation of cabinet members, the decision came as no surprise to many.

The former courts minister, James Cartlidge (who resigned this morning) told the Today Programme that he believed it would be reasonable for Johnson to stay on as a caretaker to the prime ministerial role until a leadership contest takes place.
