North East STEMFest net zero Success!

Over three days just over 3,000 pupils from across the North East descended on St. James Park for the regions biggest net zero event. 50 local businesses exhibited, demonstrating opportunities to explore a future career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) sectors earlier this week.

The event, which was organised by North East STEM Hub, delivered by RTC North, allowed 100 schools to meet and engage with businesses in person, ask questions, experience hands on activities and identify how they can get involved in related opportunities. There were also 1800 – 2000 trees given away to plant thanks to Forestry Commission.

Through five themed zones, more than 50 North East organisations leading the way in sustainability provided interactive opportunities for nine to 13-year-olds to learn more about climate adaptation, business and industry, buildings and construction, transport, and power and natural resources.

Claire Willis business development manager for the North East STEM Hub commented: “This event has brought education and skills together, helped the next generation understand the opportunities that are available to them right here in the North East. It has been a huge success highlighting the fantastic businesses and talented people we have in the region.

“NetZero is high on the UK government’s agenda for achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and we wanted to educate and inspire pupils on the importance of protecting the climate whilst demonstrating the career opportunities available to them.

“This event would not have been possible without our fantastic sponsors; Accenture, Balfour Beaty, Dogger Bank Wind Farm, Jacobs and Stagecoach, and an extended gratitude to our headline sponsor Sage who not only exhibited but also provided an array of employees from Sage to volunteer over the three days.”
