Sandbox VR set to reimagine the genre of multiplayer VR gaming in Covent Garden

Sandbox VR is the world’s premier destination for premium quality location-based VR. Since its humble beginnings when its founder Steve Zhao and a small team opened the first location in 2017, Sandbox VR is now operating in 24 locations across five countries and expanding rapidly. Their first European location is opening in London in late July 2022.

Michael Hampden, vice president of Content at Sandbox VR has been heading up Content at Sandbox VR since 2018 and is a twenty year veteran of the games industry. During his tenure, Sandbox VR’s in-house development studio has released four new games including Star Trek: Discovery ‘Away Mission’, Unbound Fighting League, Amber Sky 2088 and their latest release Deadwood Valley.

Michael Hampden commented: “As Sandbox VR continues to push the boundaries for Location Based Virtual Reality content, we are establishing what is essentially a new genre in video games. Unlike many traditional video games however, Sandbox VR experiences are extremely intuitive and enjoyed by gamers and non-gamers alike.

“Sandbox VR experiences feature a lot of agency, and groups have to work together and make tough decisions which will affect how each experience plays out. For example, our latest experience Deadwood Valley features five different endings which guests can earn depending on the actions they take during their experience.

“This combination of agency, embodiment, and immersion along with being able to enjoy it together with friends in a physical space, means that Sandbox VR experiences exist within a new genre of games which is rapidly emerging.”

Before joining Sandbox VR, Michael was a Lead Designer on two acclaimed VR titles with Sony Interactive Entertainment: PlayStation VR Worlds and Blood and Truth and a former Lead Designer on the Assassin’s Creed franchise, having worked on titles like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed: Rogue.
