Metrocentre Partnership acquires former Federation Brewery site in Gateshead

The Metrocentre Partnership, advised by its asset manager Sovereign Centros, announced that it has acquired the former Federation Brewery site, Gateshead from KPMG, the administrators acting on behalf of Intu following its collapse in 2020.

The site was marketed by Savills in mid-2021 and was subject to a two-phase bidding process. The price paid was undisclosed.

The Brewery, which began operating in 1919, reached capacity in 1980 when it moved across the river to a new “state of the art” brewery.

In 2005 it became the new home of Newcastle Brown Ale, however said operation would subsequently be transferred to Tadcaster, Yorkshire in 2010.

The 12.86 acre site sits immediately opposite Metrocentre overlooking the A1 Western bypass. According to a spokesperson, the site forms an “integral” part of the wider masterplan for Metrocentre and is a “key site” within Gateshead Council’s Action Area Plan.

Its acquisition intends to provide the opportunity for the introduction of a variety of non-retail uses, particularly leisure, which will allow the Partnership to introduce large-scale regional attractions.

Other uses including business, commerce and residential will also be outlined for the future as the centre continues to expand its influence on the area.
