Lidl to create 40 new local jobs upon Middlesbrough supermarket opening

Following “positive community feedback”, Lidl GB has submitted a planning application to Middlesbrough Council for a new supermarket on Green Lane in Linthorpe.

After a successful public consultation on the new store’s proposal, with over 2,500 residents responding in favour of the plans, Lidl GB has confirmed that a planning application for a new store on land of the former Northern School of Arts Campus has been submitted.

As households continue to navigate the increasing cost of living, Lidl claims to be committed to providing greater access to “high quality and affordable” products, through the opening of new stores.

The new supermarket would also create around 40 new full and part-time employment opportunities for the local area once opened, paying the “highest wages in the industry”.

The plans outline a modern supermarket with a 1,251 sq m sales area featuring Lidl’s in-store bakery and customer toilets with baby changing facilities.

It will also provide 94 car parking spaces, including disabled, parent and child spaces as well as rapid electric vehicle charging points. Plans for the supermarket also feature solar panels on the roof to help capture energy for the store.

A spokesperson for Lidl GB commented: “We are delighted with the positive response from the local community; to date, more than 2,500 people have written to us in support of the plans and we would like to thank everyone that has taken the time to send us their feedback.

“The store would provide improved shopping choice and convenience for members of the local community and create around 40 new jobs for local people. The proposals would also breathe new life into a prominent local site.”

The new store forms part of the company’s ongoing £1.3bn investment across the country in 2021 and 2022. Its ongoing success shows no signs of slowing, with Lidl GB now the sixth largest supermarket in the UK.
