Are Drivers Permitted to Drive on the Motorway with a Provisional Driving Licence?

Driving on the motorway can be a daunting for any driver but particularly for new and learner drivers. Without doubt there will be times when accessing the motorway will be essential to get to where you are wanting to go and so it is important that you feel both confident and safe in your driving abilities.

With high speeds and multiple lanes, it is imperative that you are well equipped to efficiently navigate the different rules associated to the motorway. For those who have recently passed their driving test and are getting ready to face the fast lanes, it can be scary, especially if you are on your own.

But are learner drivers actually allowed to drive on the motorway? Here we look at all the motorway rules you need to know.

Can I drive on the Motorway as a Learner?

In the past the answer would have been a definite ‘no’. However, due to changes in the law in 2018, drivers who have not yet passed their test, but hold a provisional license, can now be let loose on the UK’s fastest roads. However there are rules that need to be adhered to!

What are the Rules for Learners on the Motorway?

To drive on the motorway a learner driver must be accompanied by a DVLA approved driving instructor. So, unlike on other roads, you cannot just jump in the car with your Mum, Dad, sibling or friend for a quick practice, you must be learning to drive with your driving instructor (fully qualified and not a training driving instructor) in order to abide by the law.

To drive on the motorway as a learner, not only must you be in the capable hands of a driving instructor, but you must also be in a vehicle that has dual controls, so driving your own car is not an option. With the speed of the traffic on the motorway it is imperative that the driving instructor can take over the control of the car at any given moment to ensure the safety of the driver and other road users. L plates must also be used and visible to all other road users in order for them to identify you as a learner and exercise caution.

Do all Learner Drivers Have to take Motorway Lessons

At this time the answer is ‘no’. This is not a mandatory requirement in the UK and many drivers will opt to stay away from the motorway until they have passed their test. There is some expectation that maybe in the future this may change, but currently the problem of where potential test centres may need to be located presents a problem.

How Many Lessons Should I Have on the Motorway?

This is totally dependent on the individual driver. Some learners will find the prospect of driving in high speed traffic incredibly daunting, whilst others may be highly confident and keen to get into the fast lane. It is important that each learner driver takes the correct amount of tuition to ensure they, not only pass their test, but are prepared and safe for their future on the road.

It is always advisable to take motorway lessons before doing your driving test as it will greatly increase your confidence and increase your safety and the safety of others when you do finally start using the motorway on a regular basis. Especially if you are a nervous driver it is wise to invest that little bit more into your driving abilities.
