Which Label Type is Right for You?
Making sense of the various different types of labels available can seem daunting, but can actually be quite straightforward. You simply need to think about your requirements for the labels you order and how they will be used/handled after being applied. The beauty of bespoke label printing services lies in the limitless scope for customisation available. You can present a long list of requirements and preferences, which can then be met by your chosen printing house.
This includes everything from the shape and size of the label to the materials it is made of and the tack level of the adhesive. Most labels fall within one of several core categories, but there is a great deal of overlap between these label types. If you need labels that combine the benefits of several different types of labels, your label printing provider can make it happen.
With this in mind, here is a brief overview of five of the main categories of labels, along with their unique properties and functionalities:
1. Permanent Labels
This applies to an extremely broad and diverse spectrum of labels, which in all instances are designed to stay in place permanently. Permanent labels are a popular choice for many types of products, which manufacturers may wish to add their brand names to as part of the production process. Almost any type of labels (in terms of design and material) can be designed to stick in place permanently, with options available to suit all types of surfaces, and atmospheric conditions.
2. Die-Cut Labels
Die-cut labels are those where the outline of the label itself is cut to a unique shape. Along with creating one-of-a-kind labels to represent your brand or market your products, die-cut labels can also be much quicker and easier to remove from the backing paper than conventionally cut. They can also be a useful and cost-effective marketing material in their own right – businesses almost always choose die-cut stickers to hand out for promotional purposes.
3. Dry Peel Labels
Also referred to simply as easy-peel labels, these are the types of self-adhesive labels that are designed to be removed from the surface without leaving any sticky residue behind. Some may be compatible with specific materials only (like glass), while others are able to peel away from many types of surfaces cleanly and easily. This can be particularly useful for things like price tags and promotional stickers – anything that a customer may need to remove from a product after being purchased.
4. Resealable Labels
This is a variation on the sealable label design, which allows the label to be removed without leaving any sticky residue behind and then to be positioned securely back in place. The same kind of adhesive can be used to make resealable booklets and packages, which the user may want/need to close securely many times after being opened. Resealable labels need to be durable enough to withstand heavy use, and the adhesive needs to be strong enough to provide an effective seal many times over.
5. Security Labels
Security labels can be designed to incorporate a broad range of safety and security features. They can be designed to be impossible to peel away cleanly, they can feature micro text, or they can be made with holographic materials to make them difficult to counterfeit. They can also be imprinted with QR codes and similar security features, or a combination of any of the above.
