Why Take Refresher Driving Lessons?
Learning to drive is a lifelong journey – not a one-time-only task. All motorists should (in theory) spend their driving careers working continuously on becoming safer and more responsible drivers.
In practice however, this is rarely the case. Most people simply leave their driving education behind after passing their test and rarely give a second thought to their capabilities.
Ask any driving instructor and they’ll tell you the same – every single driver without the exception could benefit from refresher driving lessons. Some more than others, but the benefits of refresher driver tuition are universal.
Of course, there are instances in which refresher driving lessons come particularly highly recommended. If any of the following apply, booking even just a couple of refresher driving lessons could transform your confidence (and indeed your safety) when out and about:
1. It’s been a long time since you passed your test In the years and decades that follow a course of driving lessons, skills go rusty, and bad habits creep into the equation. Something that is true with all drivers across the board, irrespective of how safe and responsible they think they are. The simple fact of the matter is that if it has been a long time since you passed your practical test, you could definitely benefit from a couple of refresher lessons.
2. You have moved to a busy city for the first time Driving in chaotic city centre conditions is a completely different experience from driving on quieter country roads. If for any reason you are now required to drive in such conditions and have no practical experience in doing so, you could be a perfect candidate for refresher tuitions. Even just an hour or two behind the wheel under the supervision of a professional could help you negotiate even the most difficult urban driving conditions with confidence.
3. Your confidence has taken a hit after an accident Being involved in either a minor accident can radically alter a person’s perception of driving and make it difficult to drive with complete confidence. You cannot simply ‘switch off’ your anxiety, or the bad memories associated with the incident. But what you can do is take a few refresher lessons, to give you the best possible chance of avoiding such incidents again and knowing how to stay safe in all types of traffic conditions.
4. You learned to drive in a different country It could also be that you took your driving test in a different country and black practical experience driving on UK roads. Foreign driving licences are perfectly acceptable in the UK, but the rules of the road in this country are quite different to those of most foreign countries. For those within this bracket, a few refresher driving lessons to get to grips with driving in the UK should be considered mandatory (even though they are technically optional).
5. You are nervous driving with kids in the car Drivers who are naturally nervous may find the prospect of driving with young children (or other family members) in the car even more daunting. Sadly, a lack of confidence behind the wheel usually translates to a higher risk of being involved in an accident. If you would like to build your confidence and capabilities to help keep your family safe, a few refresher driving lessons could be just the thing.
6. You have not driven a car in years It is not uncommon for people to rid themselves of owned vehicles on a near-permanent basis, only to decide at some point in the future to once again get behind the wheel. If you haven’t driven a car in several years for any reason, it is essential to take to the roads once again under the watch of a suitably qualified professional. Things may have changed a great deal since you last hit the roads, and it’s inevitable that your knowledge and skills will have gone rusty over time.
