Teesside engineering consultancy bolsters expansion with £10m energy projects

A fast-growing Teesside engineering and management services consultancy has expanded its reach across the UK with work on two major energy schemes.

Stockton-on-Tees-based Encora Energy has made its first foray into Norfolk and Lincolnshire after playing its part in the successful commissioning of two gas-fired peaking plants located in these UK counties. Often known as “peakers”, they are power plants that generally run only during periods of high demand for electricity, in order to balance the grid.

Located near Great Yarmouth and Lincoln, the two plants represent an investment of around £10m across their 15-year lifespan. They have the capacity to generate up to 10.6MW of electricity at short notice and their existence is designed to bolster Britain’s energy security amid continuing turbulence in this critical industry.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sent wholesale gas prices soaring and reduced supplies of gas from Russia into Europe. Encora Energy’s work on these projects has been wide-ranging, from identifying suitable sites and overseeing the construction phase to helping the plant owners extract optimum value from the plants once operational.

It’s the latest milestone in a series of developments for Encora Energy, which recently worked on a project to commission two gas-fired peaking plants in Sunderland and Peterlee, representing a £7m investment. Encora Energy manages the operations and maintenance, on behalf of their clients, for seven“peaker“ sites with over 45 MW of capacity.

Now the company has hired additional staff to service the increased workload, including Middlesbrough-born graduate project engineer, Kyle Doab, who recently completed an electrical and electronics engineering degree at Teesside University.

Andrew Normand, business development Director at Encora Energy, commented: “Kyle is a great addition to our talented team and we already have more plans to recruit as we continue to expand our operations across the UK.

“Our latest successful projects reaffirm our commitment to fast-track Britain’s transition to a low-carbon electricity system. These gas peaking plants can provide the extra energy needed during periods of high demand.”

Encora Energy provides project development, engineering, consultancy and operations management services to customers, helping them deal with the practicalities of developing, installing, operating and maintaining new energy systems such as renewable and battery storage systems, combined heat and power (CHP) plants, fuel cells, gas engines and gas turbines.
