HelpUkraineSong: Sing up and stand up for our friends in Ukraine
Global moment of solidarity with Ukraine on Eurovision final day at 12.00 pm BST
#HelpUkraineSong officially launches today - a global grassroots movement which has already gained huge momentum and will unite the world through music on Eurovision finals day in a musical moment of solidarity for Ukraine whilst raising money for children affected by the conflict.
Similar to the NHS clap during the pandemic, #HelpUkraineSong will create the world’s biggest ever physical and digital flash mob across the UK during the build up to, and on the day of, Eurovision 2023 (Saturday 13 May 2023, Liverpool, England) by seeing people come together to perform ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ by The Beatles at 12.00pm BST and donating to War Child, the only specialist charity for children affected by conflict.
It’s been over a year since the violent conflict broke out in Ukraine, devastating the lives of millions. The war rages on, and the humanitarian needs remain as high as ever. #HelpUkraineSong is an opportunity for organisations and brands to show their continued support for Ukraine and raise critical funds for War Child’s work in the region.
From now to May 13th, organisations and brands can get involved in a variety of ways including performing their own rendition of the song with colleagues, amplifying the movement on socials and through their influencer network, or organising their own flashmob event at their public space.
A flagship flash mob is being choreographed by the Museum of Liverpool, adjacent to the Eurovision arena and village - and will be echoed at locations throughout the city, and in communities across the UK, Ukraine, and globally.
Partner organisations include: Science Museum Group, Science & Industry Museum, National Science & Medium Museum, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, RAF Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Hull and Brighton City Councils.
The idea is a self-initiated, pro-bono activation by creative experience company, Aurora, with the support of National Museums Liverpool, War Child, Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Information Policy and Hoshva PR & DGTL.
Made possible with the Red Bee Creative’s Twinning initiative, which pairs UK and Ukrainian creative agencies, project organisers Aurora is collaborating with Kyiv-based creative agency Hoshva PR & DGTL to deliver a moment that unites both nations in solidarity.
The movement is backed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Ukrainian Eurovision artists past and present, plus the Ukraine public, will be taking part either on the day or online. Globally a wave of major musicians, talent and ambassadors are giving it their backing and saying they will support, all to be revealed in the coming weeks.
The activation will show public solidarity with those affected by the war in Ukraine and encourage participants to raise funds for War Child so the charity can continue developing and deploying its life-saving work to protect, educate, and provide for the millions of children impacted by the ongoing war.
Valerie Bounds, Aurora Co-Founder and Chief Strategy & Creative Officer who conceived the idea said: “The eyes of the world will be on Liverpool and the UK as we Eurovision for Ukraine. This is an unprecedented opportunity which everyone can join in with to show our solidarity for Ukraine.”
Oleksandr Tkachenko, Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine said: “The upholding of our culture is of existential and fundamental importance to all of the people in Ukraine. We welcome and support unreservedly powerful creative initiatives such as #HelpUkraineSong which bring people together in solidarity for our brave country that fights for freedom values in unprovoked war and demonstrate the unerring international support which is so crucial to our success together.”
David Watson, Executive Director of Audiences and Media for National Museums Liverpool said: “National Museums Liverpool are proud to be the flagship location for the Help Ukraine Song movement and create a meaningful moment in solidarity with Ukraine”
Helen Pattinson, War Child Director of Fundraising and Communications said: “Over seven million people have been displaced by the war in Ukraine. War Child has been providing protection, education and support for children in the region since the conflict broke out in 2022. #HelpUkraineSong is a chance for us all to not only show our support Ukraine but raise invaluable funds for the children affected by this ongoing crisis.”
