New venue from Dog & Parrot curators to be Newcastle city centre’s “next hotspot”
A new shipping container complex ‘Frate’ is due to open its doors in Newcastle’s city centre this May.
Bringing a destination for local street food, creative drinks, live sports and entertainment space for art and cultural events, Frate is anticipated to be “one of Newcastle’s favourite outdoor venues” this Summer.
The curators of Market Shaker, Pumphreys and The Dog & Parrot are behind the new complex Frate, which is set to open to the public on Friday May 26 (bank holiday weekend). The open-air destination is being constructed using recycled freight containers in a lively central location, behind Newcastle’s infamous Grey Street.
The temporary architecture will be hidden in a “secluded, leafy spot” just off High Bridge, with fully heated and lit by pendant-style festoon lighting and a feature of murals from the UK’s “leading” local and national street artists such as Mr Penfold and many more.
Set over two levels, Frate will sit across a courtyard of shipping containers taking advantage of its “prime” location that gets the sunshine all day long.
Frate will host a large entertainment and cultural community space with alfresco dining, offering BBQ and Meze-style dishes such as Chicken Shawarma wraps alongside vegan-friendly dishes and pizzas by the slice.
Serving from brunch through to dinner, Frate aims to become the “perfect place for sunny day drinks, after-work wind-downs and vibes long into the night”, with entertainment including live sports, DJ sets and live music.
Frate will also host pop-up workshops and events including open cinema nights, record fairs, vintage clothing markets, yoga classes and much much more.
Co-curator of Frate, Rob Clarkson commented: “Frate is bringing together the best of our local and independent food, drink, art and music within the city. Hidden in plain sight, Frate sits across a courtyard with upcycled bespoke shipping containers, nestled behind one of Newcastle’s busiest streets.
“We are super excited to be bringing our new concept to life and think those of the North East will agree that Frate is an excellent addition to our region.”
