Construction firm completes mental health project
A specialist construction firm has recently completed an important contract with a mental health provider.
MGM Construction, which is based in Gateshead and works across the North East, is one of the leading specialist property refurbishment companies in the region, working on contracts for local authorities, heritage organisations and private clients.
It has recently completed the refurbishment of three care homes in Gateshead, run by Everyturn Mental Health, which provides specialist services on behalf of the NHS.
Ryan Gardiner, director at MGM, said: “The project involved upgrading three care homes to provide a better environment for the patients and ensuring systems were in line with current regulations.
“The work itself included redecoration, flooring, remedial electrical works, replacing fire doors, nurse call systems, external doors, fire door and fire alarms, along with internal refurbishment and facelift works.
“The homes remained open throughout, which meant we were working in a live patient environment, so the team had to ensure minimal disruption to patients and staff.”
MGM is also currently working on behalf of NTW Solutions, a subsidiary of Cumbria, Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, on a £3.3m project Northgate Hospital, in Morpeth, with an eye to taking on more NHS work.
The Gateshead refurbishments took eight months in total and cost £1.4m.
Ryan added: “This particular project was challenging in terms of keeping the homes fully operational while upgrading the mechanical and electrical services, and some of these works were carried out out of hours to minimise disruption and ensured we completed on time.
“Mental health services are a niche area with enhanced specifications that MGM can deliver and we are passionate about supporting local community services like this in the North East.
Alex Slack, head of estates and facilities at Everyturn Mental Health said: “MGM was awarded this contract following a competitive tender process. Given the specialist nature of our facilities, it was crucial that we appointed a contractor that understood our mission and organisational values. Working on a live site with vulnerable people has required immense coordination and communication.
“We are delighted with the way in which MGM has undertaken this work, paying due regard throughout to the welfare of our colleagues and the people we support. These projects have brought their challenges, but the project team have met and overcome them with great skill.”
