Northumbria University's new sport scholarship programme to help motivated students from all backgrounds succeed

To help motivated students from all backgrounds succeed, Northumbria University has launched a new sport scholarship programme to enable the next generation of budding coaches and officials to prosper.

In support of this, Northumbria will host a fundraising sport dinner at St James’ Park on Friday 20th October.

Crowned University of the Year 2022 at the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards, Northumbria is a research-intensive modern university, with student diversity and social mobility at its heart. Last year, it launched its Higher Education Without Barriers campaign, to enable talented students from all backgrounds to access and succeed within higher education. Powered by businesses, charitable trusts, and Northumbria alumni, it has raised more than £2 million and benefited over 1,000 students in outreach, scholarships, hardship, well-being, and enterprise.

The opportunity to go to university can be life-changing but, for many, it is out of reach. Through our campaign, we are building a community of donors, who have, so far, provided £1million+ in scholarships. Scholarships enable businesses to promote their values and brand among the brightest talents of tomorrow. Most importantly, however, they change lives. A scholarship is a significant investment in a person’s future, with benefits lasting a lifetime.

At Northumbria, we encourage students to pursue their academic and personal passions. Our new sport scholarship will enable students to achieve their ambitions as sport leaders and it will support budding female coaches and officials in its first year. Women make up only 18 percent of qualified coaches and, despite recent developments – including women refereeing at the 2022 men’s football World Cup – remain underrepresented in sport.

We’re inviting you to attend

We want to hear from businesses that share our vision to recognise the potential in talented sport leaders from all backgrounds. Our dinner on Friday the 20th of October (6pm until midnight at St James’ Park) is an ideal opportunity to align your CSR agenda to a high-profile, successful campaign, one with local roots and international relevance and support future skills growth.

As well as raising money for the new scholarship, the event will enable more students to take part in sport and physical activity, by raising money for equipment, leadership qualifications, mental health & wellbeing initiatives, and hardship support. We know that having a positive and enriching experience in sport can underpin transferable skills into employment and develop the future knowledge economy for the North East and beyond.

We are committed to Higher Education Without Barriers. Together, we can ensure no one is left behind.
