Oriel Care Home helps residents reminisce at glass blowing museum

A care home in Stourbridge brought back treasured memories for a group of residents with a special visit to the town’s glass museum.

The trip was arranged by staff at Oriel Care Home on Hagley Road in Oldswinford. Staff at the home were aware that many of the residents were talking about the times they had experienced glass blowing.

One resident had been encouraged by his wife to ‘give it a try’ whilst visiting a studio in Hull many years ago.

The team at Oriel Care Home were aware of a mutual love and fascination of glass blowing amongst the residents and came together to arrange an outing to the Stourbridge Glass Museum.

Valerie, a resident at Oriel Care Home said, “I visited the museum many years ago with my husband – but seeing it again was beautiful, I’ve never seen it like this.”

“I’ve been before, but I don’t remember much – but I have enjoyed it this time around”, added Iris, a resident at Oriel Care Home.

Gary Fowkes, activities co-ordinator at Oriel Care Home, said the outing to Stoubridge Glass Museum felt like the perfect trip to arrange. “We’re always looking for ways to help residents to pursue their hobbies and interests,” Gary said.

“It’s great to see the museum is so accessible as many of our residents use a wheelchair – the staff at the museum were very welcoming to all of the residents who joined us on the trip.”

The residents were accompanied on their tour by museum manager, Alexander Goodger.

They enjoyed interactive digital displays and a live glass making demonstration.
