La Trobe and Sheffield Hallam universities reaffirm global strategic partnership

The vice-chancellor of La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, has met students and toured some of Sheffield Hallam’s world-leading facilities during a visit to the University to reaffirm the global partnership between the two institutions.

Professor John Dewar AO visited Sheffield Hallam on Friday 9 June and met students on a joint degree programme set up between the two universities, as well as touring the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and the National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering.

Sheffield Hallam and La Trobe entered a Global Strategic Partnership in 2019 to provide opportunities for student mobility and bring together international perspectives on teaching, learning and research.

Professor Dewar came to Sheffield Hallam as part of a wider visit to the UK during which the two universities launched a new Global Security and Society Institute, to help to address major global security challenges such as cybercrime, the growth of AI and modern slavery.

Professor Sir Chris Husbands, Sheffield Hallam University vice-chancellor said: “We were delighted to welcome our partners from La Trobe to Sheffield this week where we have been able to launch a timely new research institute on global security and society, as well as advance key conversations around joint student opportunities, innovative teaching approaches and broader civic and research connections.

“We are excited by the genuine potential of this rich partnership to deliver lasting impact in both our countries and looking forward to building on our existing track record of collaboration and exchange.”

Professor John Dewar AO, vice-chancellor of La Trobe University, said: “I’m thrilled that La Trobe’s strategic partnership with Sheffield Hallam University in the UK has been reaffirmed and deepened; with this important global collaboration offering even more opportunities for students to gain an international study experience and dynamic joint research including via our new Global Security and Society Institute.”

Since the launch of the partnership in 2019, the universities have co-launched a unique collaborative degree course in international hospitality and tourism management, as well as establishing a joint PhD programme which currently has 13 funded PhD students working on new research projects.

The universities have also secured multi-million-pound joint funding for a number of cutting-edge research projects in health, wellbeing and sport.
