Downing secures planning approval for 14-storey student accomodation scheme in Newcastle
Property developer and operator Downing has secured planning committee approval for a 411-bedroom student accommodation scheme in Newcastle.
The 14-storey scheme, Heron’s Yard, located on Heber Street, will comprise a mixture of 294 studios and 117 shared cluster flats.
Designed by architect SimsponHaugh, the scheme will provide exemplary accommodation designed to meet the growing demand for high-quality student living in the city.
Heron’s Yard is the final phase of Downing Plaza, delivered over the last decade, comprising Newcastle University Business School, over 1,800 student bedrooms, a 183-room hotel, and extensive retail space.
With its strategic location, the scheme serves as a magnificent gateway to Newcastle City Centre, ideally positioned to cater to the vibrant student lifestyle.
In line with Downing’s commitment to sustainability, Heron’s Yard has been designed to a BREEAM Excellent standard and sustainable features are included throughout the development.
To promote a sense of community, Heron’s Yard will include a beautifully landscaped courtyard, providing students with a relaxing private outdoor space. The development will also offer extensive internal amenity space, catering to the diverse needs of its residents.
“We are delighted to have secured committee approval for Heron’s Yard, the final piece of our striking Downing Plaza development,” said George Tyson, projects director at Downing. “We pride ourselves on helping to transform places by creating high quality spaces that enhance the local community and bring together the neighbourhood. This development reflects our long-standing commitment to providing the highest quality student accommodation that meets our ambitious ESG targets and the evolving needs of the city and its residents.”
