New rural retreat brings “luxurious” lodges and treehouses to County Durham

Claire and Hugh Carter proudly announce the launch of Nest, a “remarkable” rural retreat featuring “stylish” chic self-catered treehouses and waterside lodges, near Durham city.

The establishment, located at Red Hurworth Farm, Wingate, invites couples to immerse themselves in the views of the landscapes, woodland, and reservoir. Nest has been designed by Claire and Hugh Carter to be a family-owned business that presents a range of accommodations to cater to diverse guest preferences.

Couples can indulge in the “luxury” one-bedroom lodges and elevated treehouses and larger parties can book the more spacious five-bedroom property, with children’s play area, The Covey.

The journey to the creation of Nest began in 2016 when Claire and Hugh purchased Red Hurworth Farm. Initially planning to lease out the farm’s bungalow, The Covey, they decided to venture into holiday lets and were “amazed” when their first booking came within 72 hours.

Fuelled by Claire’s attention to detail and personal touches, the exceptional guest experience led to the hatching of the idea of Nest in 2019, a haven offering luxurious lodges and treehouses. Both Claire and Hugh have deep roots in County Durham, where they farm and raise their three children.

Inspired by the farm’s landscapes, and abundant wildlife, they embarked on the mission to diversify Red Hurworth Farm. The avian theme throughout the business pays homage to the surrounding wildlife, with lodges aptly named after low nesting birds such as Kingfisher and Sandpiper, and treehouses as high nesting birds like Nuthatch and Wren.

Every treehouse and lodge at Nest has been designed by the Carters. The interiors showcase the colours of the birds they are named after, crafted with the assistance of the Barnard Castle based interior designers, Niche Living. These spaces feature “luxurious” fittings, including Atlas Concorde Italian tiles and Lusso fittings in the bathrooms.

Claire Carter commented: “We wanted to create self-catered lodges and treehouses that allowed guests to enjoy the views, wildlife and peace of Red Hurworth farm without having to compromise on luxuries.

“We’ve paid meticulous attention to every detail in the design from external design features to the interiors in each lodge or treehouse. Our focus was to create hidden gems nestled in nature for couples seeking unforgettable stays.”
