“Exciting” new rooftop sports facility announced for Gateshead Metrocentre
Metrocentre Gateshead has announced plans to bring an “exciting” new sports facility to the North East shopping centre.
Powerleague, the “original and premier” provider of commercial small-sided football in the UK, has today submitted plans to transform the top floor of Metrocentre’s Blue Multi-Storey Car Park into a series of 5-a-side football pitches. The football pitches allow for leagues, social bookings, kids’ parties, holiday camps and coaching.
Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, senior asset manager for Metrocentre, commented: “We’re excited to be working with Powerleague to bring this popular attraction to the centre. The plans submitted today are part of the centre’s strategy to enhance the offer and build on the range of activities and leisure facilities available to our customers.”
A spokesperson summarised on behalf of Powerleague: “It’s the UK’s home of 5-a-side football. 366 pitches. 300+ Leagues. 42 venues. A passionate team dedicated to enabling anyone that wants to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of 5-a-side.”
Powerleague offers a 5-a-side side service with leagues, tournaments, casual games, junior five a side football leagues, kids football coaching and camps and more from its ‘Power for Life’ gyms.
Metrocentre is committed to its local communities, supporting over 11,000 jobs (representing about 10.4 per cent per cent of the local retail workforce), and operating with environmental responsibility.
The first phase of its “ambitious” new project to ensure a more sustainable future is complete with the installation of 3,500 solar roof panels, equivalent to 88 tennis courts. When fully complete, Metrocentre will have the largest solar panel project of any UK shopping destination.
Major investment is also being made for the provision of 46 new solar-powered EV charging points and attaining ISO 14001 in Environmental Management Systems.
