How to Reframe Fear

CEO and Founder of Nosh Detox and GSR Coaching, Geeta Sidhu-Robb talks about reframing fear:

Fear |noun : an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

When we look at the definition of what fear is, basically it’s telling us that it’s an emotion caused by a belief. There’s a couple of things we need to break down in order to really understand what fear is and how we can reframe it.

First off, a belief is something that you feel is true to you. It does not mean it is right or wrong, but it is your truth in this moment and time.

The good thing about beliefs, is that they can change.

For instance, the popular belief in the 90’s was that milk made your bones healthier and stronger. This was perpetuated by a lot of marketing and therefore, it was what we knew to believe about milk. Fast forward today, milk is being replaced in many households with nut milks due to the fact that they aren’t as healthy as we once thought they were. We’ve since come to learn about all the hormones that are in the process of cultivating the milk and therefore a lot of people have created a new belief that milk is “bad”.

Once again, whichever you believe, is not good or bad… but in this moment in time, it’s your truth.

So let’s look at fear. Maybe you’re scared your life will never change, and that things will always stay the same. There’s a belief that is driving this fear;

Past failures Other people’s opinions The thought of it being harder than it actually is to change No support In order to be able to reframe your fear, you must first be able to look at the belief that’s driving the fear and start to change that story.

Let’s take the example of you having failed in the past… One way you can start to change the belief is by reminding yourself that you are not the same person today as you were then.

Another way is by giving yourself grace for your past failure and reminding yourself that it doesn’t define who you are today. And lastly (and most importantly), list out all the reasons why you won’t fail this time around. List them ALL! I think you’d be surprised at what you write down.
