Hampshire hospice remembers loved ones with ribbons – and ties up with local housebuilder

Barratt Homes has shown its support for a Southampton hospice by sponsoring a campaign which has given people the chance to dedicate a memorial ribbon.

During July and August Mountbatten Hampshire in West End, has been decorating its hospice garden with colourful ribbons dedicated by the local community in memory of friends and relatives who have died. And on Sunday, 30th July, the charity held a special ‘Remembering Ribbons’ event to celebrate the lives that have been lost.

Barratt Homes, which is bringing new homes to the county, has recently announced that Mountbatten will be one of its ‘Charities of the Year’ and has pledged to spend 2023 fundraising in its honour. Keen to show its support for the hospice charity’s remembrance campaign this summer, the developer handed over £2,500 in sponsorship.

Mountbatten Hampshire offers 24/7 inpatient and community domiciliary and palliative end-of-life care services to people in the local area. Kim Dowling, Head of Income Generation, said she is thrilled to have the developer’s help.

She said: “Barratt’s generous sponsorship has meant we’ve been able to promote our campaign to a wider audience and has given as many people as possible the opportunity to dedicate a ribbon of remembrance.

“At Mountbatten, we want to support everyone across our local communities to live well and die well, and we want to ensure we offer people the chance to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones, in the best way possible.

“Our Remembering Ribbons event saw members of the local community join us to remember their loved ones in the tranquil setting of our hospice garden, and it was a pleasure to see so many people here on the day.”

The memorial event brought members of the community, volunteers, and staff together to enjoy readings, music, refreshments, while also dedicating a ribbon. Bereavement volunteers were also on site to provide support and signpost visitors to other Mountbatten services.

Tammy Bishop, Barratt Homes Sales Director, Southampton Division, said: “Barratt is committed to supporting worthwhile organisations in the communities in which it is building, and Mountbatten Hampshire is offering a vital service for people who need it in the local area.

“As one of our official charities, we are thrilled to be devoting our time to this important organisation in 2023 and are pleased to be able to support its Remembering Ribbons campaign.”

Mountbatten Hampshire is the county’s oldest and largest hospice and has been serving the community for more than 45 years. Anyone living in Southampton and Hampshire with a life-limiting illness can benefit from its care and services. It also provides free support to the families and friends of those who have been bereaved. It costs the charity over £11 million every year to provide its services.
